The central municipal town of Handen combines houses from the 1950s with today's growing townscape. The heart of the area contains a shopping centre, the town council offices, education centres and a cultural centre.

Handen

Handen is a modern municipal hub that is being further developed to become more like a town centre. Alongside the well-established shopping centre Haninge Centrum, which contains more than 100 shops, cafés, restaurants and service companies you will find the town council office building and a new cultural centre that houses a library, concert hall and exhibition hall. This is also the location for the commuter train station, bus terminal and key services in the community. In addition to providing several upper secondary education courses, Handen is home to the Haninge Campus offering study programmes from KTH – the Royal Institute of Technology – and several post-secondary vocational education and training programmes (abbreviated to KY in Swedish). Right next to the built-up area and modern infrastructure, just round the corner of Campus Haninge, you will find Rudan outdoor recreation area with its lakes for swimming, angling spots and deep forests with exercise trails. More than 10,000 people live in Handen itself, but this central district is steadily merging with the nearby districts of Brandbergen and Vendelsö. Together they are home to 30,000 residents.

Brandbergen – a melting-pot in which traditions meet the future. Behind the apartment blocks in Brandbergen, ancient woodland awaits you, with Tyresta National Park and picturesque Tyresta By as the crowning glory of the area.

Brandbergen

Brandbergen is a centrally located residential area that is home to about 10,000 residents. Most of the buildings are apartment blocks, and the area is about 2 km from the shopping centre of Haninge Centrum.

The apartments in Brandbergen were built during the 1960s and 1970s and most of them were renovated about 10 years ago. Today Brandbergen is an attractive residential area with a wide range of services. Brandbergens Centrum includes supermarkets, specialist boutiques, a post office, restaurants, a pharmacy, library and a local cinema. There are two hypermarkets, Coop Forum and ICA MAXI, within walking and cycling distance. Brandbergens Centrum is surrounded by dense residential development consisting of linked and detached houses. There are also several lakes for swimming, and the ancient woodland of Tyresta National Park is within walking distance.

Vendelsö is a residential area that contains a mixture of detached houses, terraced houses and apartment blocks. The natural surroundings convey a feeling of tranquillity, and nearby there are several bathing lakes.

Vendelsö

Houses started to be built in Vendelsö between 1910 and 1920, on land that has many exciting stories to tell about wandering Stone Age hunters to the nobility of the 17th and 18th centuries based at Vendelsö Säteri. Today's Vendelsö is home to some 16,000 people. The environment is characterised by a mixture of apartment blocks and houses and a few groups of terraced and linked houses built more closely together. The Gudö area, bordering Tyresö Municipality, also includes many holiday homes. Most of the district's services are in Sågens Centrum and include a Konsum supermarket and a restaurant. A primary healthcare centre is located 1 km south-east of Sågens Centrum. Vendelsö is close to the Coop Forum and ICA MAXI hypermarkets. The district is also close to the Brandbergens Centrum and Haninge Centrum shopping centres. Vendelsö is adjacent to Tyresta National Park and Nature Reserve which offer vast areas for country walks.

Dalarö

Dalarö is home to about 1,200 year-round residents. The number of inhabitants is multiplied in the holiday season, particularly thanks to the many holiday homes and tourists who arrive in Dalarö by boat. The central parts of Dalarö have a distinctive archipelago look, with ornate wooden carvings on the buildings and winding alleys. Dalarö dates back to the Middle Ages and was a key location for Swedish naval defences between the 14th and 19th centuries. The garrison Dalarö Skans was in active use until 1854. Dalarö subsequently gained increasing significance as a seaside resort with hotels, restaurants and a harbour for small boats.

Jordbro

Jordbro is located about 3 km south of Handen. The residential area is east of the railway line and is home to approximately 9,500 people. The business park Jordbro Företagspark is west of the railway. Jordbro is surrounded by large forested areas. Today's 9,500 residents live at the heart of what in ancient times was one of Sweden's large central settlements. This may surprise some new residents, who have primarily associated the present community with the residential properties that were constructed very rapidly in the Stockholm region in the 1960s. But people were already living and working in Jordbro 7,000 years ago. Southern Jordbro is the oldest part of the present-day municipal district, and it was built and expanded between 1950 and 1970. It is dominated by apartment blocks, but there is also an area of single-family houses to the south. Northern Jordbro consists entirely of single-family houses built in the 1970s and 1980s. Jordbro Centrum includes a library, primary healthcare centre, public dental surgery, Familjecentralen (a meeting place for families with preschool-age children), shops and restaurants. The business park Jordbro Företagspark also includes restaurants.

Västerhaninge is like a small town with a town centre and residential areas of detached houses. West of Västerhaninge you will find Tungelsta – a village known for its greenhouses and market gardens.

Västerhaninge

Västerhaninge is in the southern part of Haninge and borders Hanveden (a large area of woodland and country walks to the north), Jordbro to the east, extensive farmland to the south and Tungelsta to the west. The distance to Haninge Centrum is 6 km. Västerhaninge is divided into two parts by the railway line. Well-known areas of northern Västerhaninge are Åby, Åbylund, Norrskogen and Jägartorp. Southern Västerhaninge's areas are Nedersta, Ribby and Ribbyberg and the town is home to about 10,065 residents. There are several residential areas in Västerhaninge and they were developed and expanded from the 1960s until the mid-1980s. The housing includes housing cooperative apartments, rental apartments and several areas of detached houses and group house developments (clusters of houses with similar designs). The oldest properties date back to the 1940s. Västerhaninge Centrum is situated close to the commuter train station. Here you will find supermarkets, specialist boutiques, postal services, banks, a library and the local police station.

Muskö – a separate island community in southernmost Haninge, linked to the mainland via a 3 km road tunnel under the seabed. Back in the 18th century residents of Stockholm already relished the opportunity of getting away from the bustle of the big city. A merchant called Adolf Ludvig Levin started building Ludvigsbergs Herrgård in Gustavian style in 1776.

Muskö

You reach Muskö via a 3 km road tunnel about 40 m below the seabed. The island is home to the naval base Musköbasen, which includes shipyards for the repair of the Navy's submarines.

Large parts of the island are areas of holiday homes, but there are also apartment blocks and single-family houses north of the church. At the end of the 1980s expansion took place in this area with the addition of detached houses and housing cooperative apartments. The island's population then increased rapidly from about 400 to 600 people. About 850 people now live on Muskö. Despite its small population, Muskö has a good basic range of services, including childcare and a school for years 1–5 (starting at age 6 or 7). Groceries are sold at Sandells Livs and Herrstugan, (also acting as agents for the wine and spirits shop Systembolaget and for a pharmacy; this enables residents to order such products and have them sent to the store on Muskö). A newsstand, fast food outlet and waterside petrol station for boats are located at Mickrums Brygga. Ludvigsbergs Herrgård is now a hotel, restaurant, pub and conference venue. The small town of Ösmo, about 10 minutes away by car, has a supermarket and additional services.
